Keane: Fabio had no option

Former Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane last night said Fabio Capello’s decision to publicly criticise the FA over the decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy meant he had no option but to quit as manger.

“Clearly the interview to the Italian broadcaster over the weekend has compelled it to come to this. I didn’t expect this to happen so quickly,’’ Keane said.

Keane believes Harry Redknapp would be a popular choice among fans. “Harry Redknapp will be the clear favourite to get the job and I’m sure he’ll be the fans’ favourite,’’ he said.

Wayne Rooney agreed with his former Manchester United team-mate.

He wrote on his Twitter page: “Gutted capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be english to replace him. Harry redknapp for me.’’

Capello, meanwhile, has insisted he will not go into detail on the reasons behind his resignation.

Capello told ANSA, the national Italian news agency: “I leave England and I will not say anything else.” When asked about the quotes attributed to him by other Italian news agencies, he said they were “false”.
