Westwood shines at Old Trafford

WHILE Alex Ferguson was understandably the focus of attention on Saturday, it was also a day to remember for Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

Westwood made his full Premier League debut for Sunderland and capped an impressive display with a contender for save of the season.

The stunning double save to deny first Wayne Rooney and then Patrice Evra in the second half evoked memories of Jim Montgomery’s famous match-winning double save that thwarted Leeds and secured a famous victory for Sunderland in the 1973 FA Cup final. Saturday’s save ultimately wasn’t enough to earn Sunderland any points but Westwood was still a happy man and is determined to seize his chance.
