Andrews has yellow card overturned

THE FAI last night announced the yellow card wrongly awarded to Keith Andrews in the Republic of Ireland’s final Euro 2012 Group B qualifier against Armenia has been transferred to Aiden McGeady.

As revealed in Tuesday’s Irish Examiner, Spanish referee Eduardo Itturalde Gonzalez’s official report stated Andrews had been booked for a tackle on Armenia’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan but the foul was McGeady’s, not the Ipswich man who was clearly the victim of mistaken identity.

Andrews’ caution meant he faced the prospect of missing next month’s play-off second leg against Estonia if he was to be booked in the first leg, a risk McGeady will now face.

It had initially been thought the FAI would be unable to rectify the situation as they failed to bring the issue to UEFA’s attention immediately. UEFA has now updated its records ahead of the forthcoming Euro 2012 play-off matches.

In a statement the FAI said it "takes this opportunity to thank UEFA for dealing with the matter so promptly."
