Trap: We’ll go for win against Armenia
“We started very, very well with determination and a will to win,” said Trapattoni. “In the opening 20 minutes the team showed us the result was never in doubt.
“We had many chances and could have been 3-0 up. We knew the Russia result and we were a little apprehensive.”
Despite just needing a draw now against Armenia in Tuesday’s final group game, Trapattoni insists Ireland will go out to win.
“Obviously with this result we have to play to win. We have a choice of results to win and to draw. But with this mentality we will look to win and we can achieve second place.”
Left winger Aiden McGeady was Ireland’s man-of-the-match and was happy to take the credit for the second goal, even if replayed proved it was an own goal.
“They are giving it to me,” said McGeady after being presented with a magnum of champagne from famous Ireland fan, Davy Keogh.
“Everybody was so apprehensive before the game because it was a game we simply had to get three points from.
“We go out in every game to win,” added McGeady when told a draw with Armenia will be enough to get second place. It’s going to be a tough game on Tuesday and one we want to take three points from.”
