Fantastic Aguero ‘not at peak yet’
The Argentina forward, a club-record £38 million signing, enjoyed a stunning debut in City’s 4-0 win over Swansea last night, scoring the second 11 minutes after Edin Dzeko had given the Blues the lead, setting up another for David Silva and then hitting a 30-yard shot into the net in injury-time.
It was some introduction, but Mancini thinks there is more to come.
“I think he needs to recover as he only finished the Copa America three weeks ago,” Mancini said. “He needs another two to three weeks to be 100%, maybe. For me he’s a fantastic striker; young, and he’s going to be a fantastic player for us.”
Aside from Aguero, Mancini was happy to kick the season off with a win — the only home victory anywhere in the Premier League so far.
“I am delighted with this performance,” he added. “In the first half Swansea played very well. We had some problems, then we pressed them and had some chances and in the end I am very happy.”
It was a tough night for Swansea on their Premier League debut, but manager Brendan Rodgers, who accepted his side had come up against a “terrific team’’, was quick to take the positives from the performance.
“I said to the players I was proud of them,” he said. “Up until the hour I thought we were fantastic.”
Earlier, City chief executive Garry Cook refused to be drawn on the possibility of Samir Nasri joining the club from Arsenal.
The 24-year-old midfielder has been linked with a £25m move to City but Cook said: “We always try not to disclose anything — obviously he’s still an Arsenal player and we need to respect that.”
“So unfortunately I will refrain from giving an update on that.”
Cook also said wantaway striker Carlos Tevez could now stay at the club after deals with Corinthians and Inter Milan have so far failed to materialise. “He is still a Manchester City player and to see him playing alongside Aguero is going to be pretty exciting for all the City fans,” he added.
