KENNY DALGLISH was in Ireland yesterday to launch an initiative designed to help forge fresh links between young footballers here and Liverpool FC.

The current manager at Anfield recalled that Irish players such as Steve Staunton and Ronnie Whelan had been “fantastic servants” for the club, noting that the Dubliner, in particular, was “iconic for us because he kept scoring goals in cup finals which is not a terribly bad habit”.

However, Dalglish appeared to play down suggestions that there might be a new role at Anfield for Staunton, despite reports still persisting that the former Ireland manager could be one of a number of ex-Liverpool players who will be invited back to do some coaching at the club’s youth academy.
