SUNDERLAND goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has revealed his rejection at Manchester City as a youngster fuels his desire to be the best.

The 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international, who joined the Black Cats on a free transfer from Coventry last month, suffered the heartache of being shown the door by then City boss Kevin Keegan as a teenager, and the lesson that setback taught him is one which continues to drive him forward.

Dreams of playing Premier League football were shattered as Westwood started the process of resurrecting his career in the Conference with Carlisle, and he admits that in many ways, it was the best thing that could have happened to him.
