Three Irish keepers on the move
And Grimes is one of three Irish keepers on the move, with senior internationals Keiren Westwood and Joe Murphy also set for pastures new. Westwood completed a move to Sunderland last night.
Leeds said yesterday that Grimes, 16, will take his place on the Yorkshire club’s scholarship scheme later this summer. Grimes has represented Ireland at U16 level and United manager Simon Grayson said: “Eric is a good player with good potential and he is definitely one for the future.
“This is an area we needed to strengthen in the younger age groups and Eric has a great opportunity to develop within the club’s academy system.”
And Grimes is arriving at Elland Road at an opportune time, with Kasper Schmeichel, son of Manchester United legend Peter, having left the club this week as he looks to be on his way to Leicester City.
Meanwhile Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood last night completed his move to Sunderland.
Westwood was on Wearside earlier this week to finalise the deal and undergo a medical.
Coventry had earlier confirmed the 26-year-old free agent would not be signing a new contract at the Ricoh Arena.
Coventry manager Andy Thorn said: “Keiren has been an outstanding player for this club and I would like to wish him all the best for the future.”
Another Irishman, Scunthorpe’s out-of-contract Joe Murphy is believed to be the number one choice to replace Westwood at Coventry. Murphy’s contract with the Iron ran out soon after they were relegated at the end last season and the 29-year-old Ireland player is attracting several admirers in the Championship.
