Torres positive the goals will soon flow
Torres once again drew a blank in Tuesday’s dramatic Barclays Premier League win over Manchester United and has now gone four games without scoring since his record-breaking £50million (€58m) move from Liverpool.
Despite his travails, the 26-year-old appears unconcerned by his drought and confident the goals will flow once he adjusts to the Blues’ style of play.
“It’s important to understand the style of football your team is playing, how you are involved in the system and everything,” Torres said.
“This always takes some time. But, I think, once you get it, everything becomes much easier.
“The important thing is to have different options in the way you play.
“I’m ready for this because I want to play where the manager asks me to – I know the competition is high here.”
Torres has no doubts he will be a success at Chelsea.
“I have confidence in myself, I have confidence in this team and I have tried to become involved in everything this team is doing from the first day.”
Frank Lampard claims Chelsea can follow their dramatic turnaround against United with a sensational comeback in the title race.
But the England midfielder warned his team-mates that Tuesday’s 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge would “mean nothing” if they did not now go on a winning run.
Lampard, who scored the winner from the penalty spot against the Red Devils, said: “United have enough experience to know it is a marathon and there is a long way to go. But we don’t really care about anyone else. If we keep winning all our games, we’ll be in with a shout.
“Statements don’t matter unless they’re backed up. We need to go on from here.
“We normally go on a late run at this time of the season and that is what we hope to do now. If we don’t get a result in our next game, against Blackpool, then this will mean nothing.”
There had been reports in the build-up to the United game that Didier Drogba was sulking over losing his place in the side to Torres.
But Lampard insists that could not be further from the truth, saying: “His reaction to losing his place has been brilliant and it is a load of nonsense when people say he has the hump. It has been far from that.
“He has been getting behind the lads, telling us to come on.
“He has trained with commitment and played with commitment as a substitute.
“It is nonsense to say he is sulking.”
Lampard also hailed the performance of Ashley Cole, which came just days after it emerged he had accidentally shot an intern, and who was arguably lucky to avoid a suspension by his club.
“Ashley plays brilliantly every game,” Lampard said.
“That’s why he is the best left-back in the world.”
Goalkeeper Petr Cech admits Chelsea must still rely on a United meltdown, however.
Cech said: “There are still 33 points in play, so it may happen. But it all depends on Manchester and whether they will feel the effects of this defeat.
“They still have it in their own hands and 12 points is a good lead.
“We have just made the first step but we are satisfied with the result and with the fact that we have moved into fourth and are just two points behind Manchester City.”
