The look of the Irish

The good

Stephen Elliott: The former Sunderland man scored a brace to give Hearts a 2-0 win at Hamilton. Elliott’s first came after 22 minutes when he got on the end of a cross and headed home from close range. Just 30 seconds into the second half, Elliott repeated the dose with another header from inside the six-yard box.

Aaron Doran: The teenager was on the scoresheet as Inverness drew with 3-3 with St Mirren in a thriller at Love Street. Doran’s goal was the fourth of an action-packed first-half, as he finished from 12 yards after 34 minutes for his first goal since arriving from Blackburn Rovers on loan. Fellow Irishman Adam Rooney scored the other two goals for Inverness.

The bad

Shane Long: The in-form striker was among the goals again at the weekend but, unfortunately for him, his effort wasn’t enough to earn Reading a point as they lost 2-1 at Norwich. The Royals were trailing 1-0 when Long got on the end of Jimmy Kebe’s pass to equalise after 26 minutes.

Keiren Westwood: The Coventry goalkeeper has struggled for form of late and admitted over the weekend that speculation about his future has been playing on his mind. Westwood was linked with numerous clubs in January and admitted: It’s been on my mind recently but I can’t make any excuses for my game and I have got to be strong enough to take the criticism because it can’t all be rosy for you.’’

The ugly

Paul Green: The Irish midfielder endured a miserable weekend as his Derby side lost again, this time at home to Leicester. The Rams fell 2-0 behind before half-time and were unable to find a way back into the game in the second half. The Rams are languishing in 17th place in the table, without a win in six league games

James McCarthy: The midfielder’s international future remains in doubt after Wigan boss Roberto Martinez revealed the 20-year-old will not be making a decision on his senior international future until the end of the season. McCarthy would be a huge loss and Giovanni Trapattoni’s handling of the issue has been, at best, questionable.
