McCarthy facing ‘very deep’ decision on Ireland future

WIGAN manager Roberto Martinez says James McCarthy faces “a very, very deep” decision about whether to switch allegiance from the Republic of Ireland to Scotland.

However, the Spaniard is adamant the promising 20-year-old midfielder should not be rushed into making one of the biggest decisions of his fledgling career.

McCarthy sat out the Republic’s Carling Cup Nations victory against Wales on Tuesday as he only recently recovered from an ankle injury and Martinez did not want him to be risked.
