Peter Odemwingie gave Albion an early lead only for the Latics to hit back through Charles N’Zogbia and Ben Watson. But Fortune salvaged a share of the spoils for the home side with 11 minutes remaining to keep the Baggies three points ahead of Wigan with a game in hand.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was pleased with his side’s performance after falling behind but admitted they must start to kill games off.

“The hardest thing then is to get on level terms and get in front,” he said. “We had two great opportunities and if we had got a third goal the game would be over and it would have been three points well deserved.

“That’s something we need to learn from, that lack of concentration has cost us. It’s been a sign of our season but we need to carry on with the same attitude.”

Opposite number Roberto Di Matteo also had reason to point to missed opportunities, with substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune and captain Chris Brunt rattling the woodwork and a number of late penalty appeals dismissed.

“We hit the post twice and had some good chances, and the keeper made some great saves as well,” he said.

“There was a penalty for us as well – we had one not given against Blackburn, against (Manchester) United, it just keeps coming. There was a handball and then a foul on (Steven) Reid from (Steve) Gohouri, it’s disappointing – they’re key decisions and we’re not getting them.”

WEST BROM: Myhill, Jara (Reid 77), Scharner, Olsson, Cech, Mulumbu, Brunt, Cox (Fortune 65), Vela (Tchoyi 58), Thomas, Odemwingie.

WIGAN: Al Habsi, Boyce, Gohouri, Gary Caldwell, Figueroa (Steven Caldwell 70), McCarthy (Thomas 62), Watson, Diame, N’Zogbia, Rodallega, Di Santo (Moses 76).

Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffordshire).
