WITH a “welcome back” from Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish returned to a Premier League dug-out for the first time in a dozen years at Old Trafford yesterday as Liverpool exited the third round of the FA Cup in a controversial 1-0 defeat.

A hotly disputed Ryan Giggs penalty and first-half red card for his captain Steven Gerrard were the lowlights of Dalglish’s first game since being placed in charge of his beloved Liverpool until the end of the season as successor to Roy Hodgson, sacked by owner John Henry on Saturday morning.

The competitive fires still clearly burn in Dalglish, who strongly disagreed with the two key decisions from referee Howard Webb that helped decide the tie, and there was no disguising the pride he felt at being appointed temporary manager or his desperation to improve his club’s position.
