Moses can lead Wigan out of the wilderness
At 19 his idea of fun is to race down the wing, terrify his opponent and either grab a goal or set up a chance. Moses did just that on Saturday when he scored the winner in the 1-0 victory against West Brom at the DW Stadium.
It was the first league goal of the season for the England Under 21 international, who arrived at the end of the January transfer window in a £2.5million move from Crystal Palace.
Moses lit up the game with his surging runs after coming on in the second half and must be in with a chance of starting against Manchester United on Saturday at Old Trafford.
You get the impression Moses would not be fazed as he also did well in the draw with Liverpool in midweek.
He said: “It is up to the manager (Roberto Martinez). I am just keen to play football and enjoy myself. That is the best thing.
“I want to get at the full-back as soon as I get the ball, threaten him and make him nervous. It is important to create chances for the team and go forward all the time.
“There are a lot of games to come and I am just keen to keep learning and improving.”
Moses’ vital goal came in the 70th minute when he steered the ball beyond goalkeeper Scott Carson and into the corner of the net after being set up by Charles N’Zogbia.
Wigan’s first win in six league games took them out of the bottom three and Martinez praised Moses for his contribution.
Martinez said: “We wanted to stretch the game and that is why I sent him on. He has the ability and is in a great moment.
“I am not just using him as an impact player. He had a couple of injuries and has had to bide his time. Victor is a very mature player and is ready to help the team.”
West Brom nearly snatched a point in stoppage time but substitute Marc-Antoine Fortune saw his effort beaten away by Ali Al Habsi.
After a bright start the newly-promoted side have taken just one point out of a possible 12 and manager Roberto Di Matteo said: “It is disappointing.
“We will try to lift ourselves and win the next game (against Stoke). Anyone can beat anyone and I think it will be like this until the end of the season.”
