Murray impresses Keane

IRISH youngster Ronan Murray could be in line for his Championship debut for Roy Keane’s Ipswich Town in their first home game of the season against Burnley this afternoon.

Ireland U19 international Murray came off the bench to score one and create two in Tuesday’s 3-2 Carling Cup win at Exeter, his first appearance for the senior side.

The Tractor Boys boss says the 18-year-old, who has been nicknamed ‘Rooney’ by his Ipswich team-mates, has an uncanny eye for goal: “He’s a good player, a good striker and, in terms of all the players at the football club, he’s probably the most natural finisher we have. We’re delighted with him.”

The Glencastle youngster came through Ipswich’s academy ranks after signing from Mayo side Erris United in 2007, having been spotted by Robin Turner, a fringe player during Bobby Robson’s time as Ipswich boss now living in the west of Ireland.

Keane says 5ft 7in tall Murray was the ideal substitute at Exeter: “He came on the other night, he had a shot after about three minutes, he scored, he got involved in the other two goals and the keeper made a really good save from him.

“What he did, and what you’re always hoping your players will do, particularly your subs, is affect the game. Good players affect the game. If he performs like he did the other night, he’ll be in the team.

“We knew he’d do something the other night, but that was the other night, Burnley’s different.

“We’re at home, they’re physically a bigger, stronger team and they’ve just come out of the Premiership. He trained (Friday) and looked sharp, but I’m yet to finalise my 18.”
