No World Cup guarantee for Carragher

ENGLAND defender Jamie Carragher has dismissed suggestions he has been guaranteed a place in Fabio Capello’s final World Cup squad.

Carragher was a surprise name in the Italian’s 30-man training party, having retired from international football in 2007, but with a number of central defenders either short of fitness or out of form he could be included.

The Liverpool stalwart returns after three years in the wilderness having been frustrated under former manager Steve McClaren, and has been widely tipped to be named in the 23-man squad for South Africa this summer.

Capello will name the final 23 on 1st June and Carragher is adamant that he is not assured of a place.

“I was asked would I like to have the chance to go to the World Cup, and the chance was to be part of the 30,” he said.

“The manager’s never seen me before really, on a day-to-day basis around the hotel and in training every day.

“The manager doesn’t really know me so I think it’s very difficult to guarantee anyone, especially me when he doesn’t really know me.’’
