McGlynn admits betting probe involvement
McGlynn, who scored for his current club Bohemians in a 4-2 win at Drogheda United on Friday night, expressed ignorance of the full extent of the rules, pointing out he had not betted on games involving his own team. He claimed to have made “small bets” on four matches, Cork City v Wexford Youths in August 2008, Dundalk v Sligo Rovers, St Pat’s v Bray, both in May 2009 and Kildare v Longford in June 2009.
McGlynn said he was “disappointed” the FAI went public yesterday, claiming a hearing into the matter will not take place until April 16.
“Although I was not named, inevitable speculation and rumour that follow such allegations meant it is necessary for me to clarify the position,” McGlynn said in a a statement issued via the Professional Footballers Association of Ireland.
“I was not a player for any of these clubs at the time and had no involvement in the matches in any way. I had no knowledge relating to or influence over the outcomes and it, in fact, merely resulted in my losing money.
“At the time I placed these bets, I was not aware of the full text of Rule 100. I genuinely believed the rule simply prohibited me from betting on matches involving my own club and I was shocked to discover otherwise.”
His club, meanwhile, expressed their support, a Bohs statement pointing out that McGlynn had “admitted to errors of judgement and (that the club) considers that these errors were minor”.
Meanwhile, the FAI Junior Council have ordered a replay of the recent Junior Cup quarter-final between Tipperary side St Michael’s and Limerick club Pike Rovers at Cooke Park in Tipperary. Rovers came from 2-0 down to win the original clash 4-2 after extra-time. However, the Tipp side lodged a protest following the loss based on alleged irregularities in the re-grading of a number of former League of Ireland players who have returned to junior football with Pike.
