I am producing what Trapattoni is looking for, insists Reid

SUNDERLAND midfielder Andy Reid believes his current impressive form can earn him an international recall.

I am producing what Trapattoni is looking for, insists Reid

Reid hasn’t figured in a Republic of Ireland squad since a disagreement with Trapattoni over a curfew the Italian imposed in the wake of the Republic’s World Cup qualifier against Georgia in Mainz last year. Sunderland manager Steve Bruce recently suggested an apology from the Dubliner might be the only way to end the stalemate.

There has also been speculation that Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn will attempt to broker a peace deal between the two ahead of next month’s World Cup play-off against France.

The Italian continues to insist Reid’s omission is nothing personal, but the 27-year-old’s superb form this season, particularly in recent games against Manchester United and Liverpool, has seen calls for his return intensify.

Yesterday Reid suggested the ball is now firmly in Trapattoni’s court.

‘‘I don’t pick the squads. It’s up to the Ireland manager if he wants to pick me,’’ Reid said. ‘‘I feel I’m getting to a stage where I’m producing what he is looking for.’’

He added: “I’m playing with a smile on my face. I feel in great form at the moment, I’m playing well but most importantly I’m enjoying my football.

“All I can do is turn in performances like I did on Saturday (against Liverpool) and since I’ve been in the team.’’

Meanwhile Trapattoni has again reiterated his desire for Stephen Ireland to end his self-imposed international exile, stating the Manchester City

Trapattoni said: “My door is always open to him and some of the best champions of the past have enjoyed successful comebacks. He can be like them if he wishes. (But) if a player does not want to play for his country, there is nothing I can do. I believe he will regret this decision when he is older.”
