Keane admits interest in Campbell
The former Tottenham and Arsenal centre-back, 35, is not expected to be allowed to sign for another club until the transfer window reopens in January.
But Irishman Keane yesterday indicated he could swoop if a deal could be done to bring the former England international to the Coca-Cola Championship club.
“It depends on his contract situation,” Keane said.
“If his contract is terminated then I don’t think he can play for anyone else (until) January. But we are interested in players who are available and who can come in and strengthen our squad.
“But that’s a big if. It would be a long shot, no doubt.”
Keane continued: “We’re interested in any player who is available and would be interested in coming to Ipswich. I’m sure Sol, if he can play because will have plenty of options because he is a good player. We’ll see.
“I had a similar situation when I left (Manchester) United. I had my contract and couldn’t play for someone else until January although I was told something different and that’s a different story.
“I think Sol has had a lot of criticism over the last few days but I admire people who make a decision.”
