Wolves agree McCarthy fee
Accies have confirmed they have accepted an offer for the highly-rated teenager from the newly-promoted Premier League side.
The Republic of Ireland U21 international is now expected to hold talks with the Molineux club.
The 18-year-old has been the source of constant speculation about his future, having been linked with Celtic, Burnley and Portsmouth.
But he could be set to join Brian Easton in England’s top-flight next term after his former team-mate sealed a move to Burnley. According to reports, Wolves had an initial offer for McCarthy rejected earlier this week, before coming back with an improved bid of more than £2 million (€2.3m).
Asked if it would be a blow to lose McCarthy, Hamilton boss Billy Reid said: “I think that’s an understatement.
“To lose James would be a blow, the same as it was a blow to lose Brian.
“But it’s not at that stage yet. That’s really all I can say at the moment.”
Meanwhile, Hull have withdrawn their interest in Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy after talks over personal terms broke down.
The Tigers agreed an initial fee of £1.5m (€1.7m) with the Wearsiders for the Irish player earlier this week and were due to meet the 26-year-old yesterday. The news is a further blow to the club after also failing in their attempts to sign Fraizer Campbell, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Michael Owen this summer.
Elsewhere, Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has admitted there has been interest from other clubs in Richard Dunne.
Dunne’s future at Eastlands has been the subject of intense speculation with City being linked with a host of defensive recruits this summer.
City are chasing Chelsea’s John Terry and Everton stopper Joleon Lescott, placing question marks over Dunne’s long-term future.
The likes of Sunderland, Tottenham and Stoke have been credited with an interest in the Republic of Ireland international and although Hughes admits there have been enquiries. about Dunne’s availability.
“There has been interest in Richard which is to be expected because he is a good player,’’ Hughes said.
“I have spoken to Richard already. We have no firm offers for him and it is not something on which we are going to dwell.
“We are looking to strengthen all areas and people make assumptions that maybe players that we are after will have an effect on those who are already here. What we are looking at is to make sure the team and the squad is stronger than it was last season.
“I have always said I will not let good players go unless we are in a position to make ourselves stronger.’’
