Quinn keen to secure Dunne deal
Dunne’s departure from Manchester City has yet to be confirmed but Mark Hughes is in the process of rebuilding his first-team squad and the Irish international is coveted by a number of leading English clubs.
One report yesterday went as far as to state that Dunne was all set to sign on the dotted line with the Black Cats and Quinn has admitted that he would love to see the Tallaght man wear the red and white stripes.
“He is an excellent footballer but he is Man City’s and we are led to believe that he is a Man City player until they say any different and that he is not actually for sale until that point.
“We will have to stand in line,’’ added Quinn who was launching the 2009 TG4 Ladies Football Championship.
“We are not the only admirers of Richard Dunne. If there is a chink of light through that door at Man City we will get through it if we can.’’
Unlike the last two summers when Roy Keane was manager, Sunderland have intimated that they will not be splurging out on a large number of players during the transfer window.
Darren Bent, Peter Crouch and Wigan’s Lee Cattermole are some of the others to have been linked with the north-east club but Quinn is looking for the new management team to build from within by improving the players already on their books.
“Steve Bruce thinks that as well. It’s not just me. We did that last year. We made a lot of changes last year. We have made a lot of changes over the years and we’ve got some nice players there.
“Steve was very aware of it before he took the job. We probably need a few men, a few spirited people to come in and lift what we have and make what we have better and Richard Dunne would fit that bill. Of course he would.’’
Quinn flew back to Sunderland late last night for what he expects to be a busy week now that the majority of managers have returned to their clubs following the traditional end-of-season downtime.
Bruce has yet to make his first signing as Sunderland manager and it remains to be seen if he encounters the same aversion some players had when it came to contemplating a move to the region which Keane did during his time in charge.
Another imponderable is the effect Manchester City’s blank cheque book will have on the entire transfer scene in England but the Sunderland chairman isn’t losing much sleep over the big spenders at Eastlands.
“If we are in competition with Man City we would lose,’’ he said of the Eastlands club’s deep pockets.
“It is as simple as that. We know that money will come into play but there are players out there who have more to offer than just their agents’ financial qualifications.’’
