Derby delight for Bohemians

BOHEMIANS moved top of the League of Ireland Premier Division with an emphatic 3-0 victory over St Patrick’s Athletic in Saturday night’s Dublin derby at Dalymount Park.

Glen Crowe opened the scoring with his first of the season on 48 minutes. Graham Carey doubled the lead in the 70th minute and Jason Byrne shot home the third on 77 minutes.

Pat’s had started well but soon fell apart and played the last half hour with 10 men after Dave Partridge was sent off.

The home side took the lead on 48 minutes when Crowe connected with Glen Cronin’s ball from the right and glanced a header past Rogers from close range.

Carey topped a terrific personal performance with a tremendous low drive past Rogers before Cronin set up Byrne for the third with a fine turn and shot.

Meanwhile, in the First Division Waterford United and Athlone Town recorded wins which leave them at fourth and fifth respectively.

Late goals from Gary Dunphy and Graham Cummins helped Waterford to a 3-1 win over Finn Harps at Finn Park.

Harps had taken the lead in the opening quarter of an hour but relinquished it straight after the restart.

Conor Gethins’ third goal of the season had Finn Harps ahead with a penalty but then full back Alan Carey delivered in a dangerous ball which was eventually slotted home by Cummins. Dunphy scored on 73 minutes and Cummins went on to secure the points.

Athlone’s 1-0 win earned the bragging rights as they claimed all three points against Longford Town in the first midlands derby of the season.

The visitors controlled the game and their dominance paid off in the 18th minute when Thomas McGauley broke the deadlock. A corner from the left was swung in by Brian Cleary and centre-half McGauley powerfully headed home from close range.
