Bassong: we can do without Given

SEBASTIEN BASSONG says Newcastle can avoid the drop despite the loss of iconic keeper Shay Given.

Bassong: we can do without Given

Ireland netminder Given, arguably the best shot-stopper in the league, handed in a transfer request in January before eventually completing his protracted move to Manchester City

Losing such a talented was a massive blow for the Magpies, who are just a point above the relegation zone, but Bassong, insists they can plot a route to survival without him.

The French defender has even declared that he and his team-mates are happy that their former goalkeeper has secured the move he was pushing for.

“Shay’s January departure didn’t break our spirit because we knew that our second keeper, Steven Harper, is talented and good enough to replace him,” Bassong said.

“The entire squad is just happy for Shay because he wanted to move on in order to experience something new, and he has what he wanted.

“All we can do is wish him good luck in his new adventure.”
