Morecambe block Cork’s McIlroy bid

MORECAMBE have blocked a move by Cork City to speak to Sammy McIlroy about their vacant managerial post.

The eircom League of Ireland club asked for permission to talk to McIlroy about their vacant position.

But Morecambe, who rebuffed similar approaches from Shrewsbury Town last season, have blocked the move for a manager who signed a contract extension, tying him to the Christie Park club until the end of next season, only two months ago.

Morecambe chief executive, Rod Taylor, confirmed that the club had denied Cork permission to speak to McIlroy.

But now that the story had hit the media club officials had spoken to Sammy out of courtesy to tell him of the approach.

Sammy told The Visitor: “I know all about Cork and they are a big club in Ireland with an owner who has ambitious plans for them.

“I am glad that people like Cork are thinking of me but my heart is set here at Morecambe, I’ve just signed an extension to my contract which I was glad to do and our chairman has said ‘no’ to Cork which is good enough for me and the end of it as far as I’m concerned.”
