It’s something of a change in tune for the manager who, in the past, has invariably suggested it would be better for the world champions to win all their games, leaving Ireland a clearer run at the runner-up spot and a play-off place.
But Trapattoni now seems to believe that injury concerns and the lack of a settled side have left the Italians more vulnerable than before, even though they currently head the group on 10 points, three ahead of Ireland who, admittedly, have a game in hand.
