ROY KEANE has said he should have put his emerging young players in the Carling Cup this week after his team scraped past Northampton.

Keane made eight changes to the side that beat Middlesbrough in the Premier League last Saturday, bringing in internationals Marton Fulop, Carlos Edwards, Daryl Murphy, Andy Reid and David Healy as well as Phil Bardsley, Danny Collins and Grant Leadbitter.

And some of them failed to impress as Sunderland scraped through 4-3 on penalties.
