Lampard: we can win title without Robinho
Chief executive Peter Kenyon had been working on a deal for Robinho but the acrimonious saga took a fresh twist at the weekend when Real criticised the conduct of Chelsea and ultimately the London side failed to get their man.
Midfielder Lampard shares the view of boss Luiz Felipe Scolari by suggesting Robinho would have been a welcome addition, rather than a signing to make or break their season.
Speaking before the transfer window closed last night Lampard said: “I think the squad is strong enough no doubt about it.
“Any extra signing of a top-quality player would be a bonus but we have a very strong squad.
“I think we’ve shown that at the start of the season and in past seasons. We’ve added to it very well already and I feel we are strong enough anyway.”
Chelsea dropped their first points of the season when Tottenham poached a 1-1 draw on Sunday, with Scolari’s men failing to break down the visitors at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard feels getting the most out of home advantage could be the key to the title, after drawing seven times on their own turf last season.
“That cost us the league (last season),” Lampard added.
“With most teams that win the league you’ll find their home form is pretty formidable. Maybe teams have looked at that and wanted to try and stop us playing through the middle. The onus is on us to do something different.
Meanwhile Chelsea striker Didier Drogba came through nearly an hour of his comeback from a knee injury in Chelsea reserves’ 3-2 win at Arsenal last night. The striker has been out for four months but seemed to come through his run-out without any problems at Barnet’s Underhill ground.
The Ivory Coast international set up a goal in the first half and was replaced by youngster Fabio Paim in the 58th minute.
