Gera strike puts West Brom top

WEST BROM returned to the top of the Coca-Cola Championship after Zoltan Gera’s second-half goal earned the Baggies a 1-0 win at Wolves.

West Brom struck when a quick ball forward caught the Wolves defence square and after Phillips had skipped over the challenge of Collins, he was able to slide a ball across the six-yard box to Gera who side-footed home unmarked.

The Baggies were joined in the automatic promotion places by Hull, who claimed an emphatic 3-1 victory at Barnsley, with goals from Dean Marney, Ian Ashbee and substitute Dean Windass.

In League One, Huddersfield claimed a 1-0 win over Yorkshire rivals Leeds after both teams were reduced to 10 men for the second half.

Leeds’ Irish international Jonathan Douglas was sent off for his second bookable offence, just seven minutes after receiving his first yellow card. Jonathan Worthington was dismissed for serious foul play on half-time.

Andy Holdsworth’s header 15 minutes from time was enough to give the Terriers victory.

Elsewhere MK Dons failed to confirm promotion from League Two after a 0-0 draw with Hereford. Paul Ince’s side had needed to win to go up to League One while Aldershot returned to the Football League, with a 1-1 draw with Exeter promoting them from the Blue Square Premier.
