Sevilla prepare tapping up case
Ramos, who had a contract with Sevilla until next summer, handed in his resignation with Primera Liga club on Friday night before being unveiled as Spurs’ new manager yesterday.
However, Sevilla president Jose Maria Del Nido is far from happy with the circumstances surrounding the move, believing the north London side opened talks with Ramos without the Spanish club’s permission.
Spurs were closely linked with a move for the 53-year-old coach in August, with Ramos claiming at the time he had received a “dizzying” offer from the Premier League club.
A Sevilla spokesman said: “It is true that he [Del Nido] is going to consider submitting a formal complaint to FIFA and UEFA for negotiations with the coach, who had a contract, without the knowledge or permission of Sevilla FC.”
When asked when Del Nido was going to make the complaint, the spokesman added: “At the moment it is only an intention which the lawyers must think over and contemplate.”
Ramos, who is expected to lure ex-Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet away from Leeds as his number two, has already made it clear he intends to raid his former club for two of its star players — former Spurs striker Freddie Kanoute and defender Daniel Alves.
The pair will not come cheap: the Spanish side rejected a reported €36million (€51m) bid from Chelsea for Alves in the summer.
Ramos will have seen from yesterday’s display that there is much work to be done if he is not to go the same way as countless predecessors.
But the Spaniard insisted: “I am my own man. I have my projects and my style of work that have demonstrated results in Sevilla. Now I desire to repeat the experience at Spurs.”
The White Hart Lane board will certainly be praying this is so, particularly as the way they had handled Jol’s departure repeatedly bordered on the farcical.
The Dutchman yesterday claimed he had been the last to know of his sacking after Getafe’s 2-1 win at White Hart Lane on Thursday.
“The first I knew was when I saw my nephew immediately after the game,” he insisted. “He pulled me to one side and told me what everyone else seemed to know already.”
