Return of Owen softens Johnson injury blow

MICHAEL OWEN was given the all-clear to link up with the England squad tomorrow after scoring in Newcastle’s 3-2 win over Everton yesterday.

Return of Owen softens Johnson injury blow

England coach Steve McClaren was at St James’ Park to see Owen make an appearance as a substitute in the 74th minute following groin surgery.

But there was a bleaker verdict on two of his other strikers who were involved in the match.

Everton’s Andy Johnson is definitely ruled out of the games against Estonia and Russia because of an ankle injury that will need surgery today, while Newcastle’s Alan Smith is doubtful after picking up a knee injury.

Owen, who wanted to start yesterday’s game but was overruled by manager Sam Allardyce, said: “I’m fine. I am playing without pain and I can only get better.

“I’ve put in a lot of hard work and I was disappointed not to start. My surgeon has told me to push it hard and nothing will break down.”

Allardyce added: “I have to be very protective with Michael and that’s why he didn’t start. In his opinion he was ready, in my opinion he wasn’t.

“It’s about getting him consistently fit for Newcastle. He will link up with England, but I don’t know whether two games in a short period for them is right. It’s not my decision, but I will speak to Steve McClaren.”

Smith is having treatment on his injury and Allardyce admitted: “I don’t know if he will go with the England squad.”

Johnson went on as a substitute yesterday despite suffering from his ankle problem. “He will be out for three or four weeks and it’s a big blow for Everton,” said manager David Moyes.

“He’s got a problem and wants it sorted.”
