AS Louis Saha, the Manchester United forward whose limbs appear to be crafted from finest bone china, limped off the Old Trafford pitch complaining of a knee injury moments before kick-off on Saturday, it simply underlined what many have suspected of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad: that he continues to lack a true centre-forward capable of delivering the important silverware this season.

Saha’s inability even to start the game summed up his woeful fitness record and the fact that United simply cannot rely on the French forward to score goals for them this season.

So what is Ferguson left with? The wing wizardry of Cristiano Ronaldo and the two peas from the same pod that are Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, the odd couple strike partnership that the United manager is convinced will unlock the door to Premier League and Champions League glory this season.
