But Martin Jol, the Tottenham manager who delivered this most painful of home truths, has suffered too much at the hands of his arch-rival and close neighbour to resist twisting the knife.

“Arsenal would like to achieve more,” he said. “They have 60,000 at every home match and they will be disappointed with being only fourth in the league. They are still a bit better than us, because they are fourth and we are not, but I’m sure next season, with all the talent they have, they should be looking higher.”
