Terry scan ‘routine’ as Chelsea forced to play waiting game

CHELSEA insist John Terry’s scans since the Carling Cup final are part of the “routine” assessment following a head injury.

Terry scan ‘routine’ as Chelsea forced to play waiting game

The 26-year-old was knocked unconscious during the victory against Arsenal on Sunday after being caught accidentally by Abou Diaby, but the Blues skipper returned to join the celebrations later that evening.

His scan on Wednesday revealed no complications from the head injury and Chelsea have confirmed that any further treatment is the normal part of rehabilitation.

“We stress that the scan was entirely routine and normal procedure for an injury of this type and raised no cause for concern,” read a statement from the Premiership champions.

Terry swallowed his tongue and stopped breathing when he was knocked unconscious, and he later thanked Gunners physio Gary Lewin for his swift treatment from the sidelines.

Despite the positive news on Terry’s scan, the severity of the injury has raised concern over whether the England skipper should return to action immediately.

Chelsea face Portsmouth tomorrow as they look to make up ground on Premiership leaders Manchester United, then they switch their attention to the Champions League next week when they face Porto.

Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven defender Manuel da Costa has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old, who was born in France but has represented Portugal U21s, said: “Obviously I would like to represent a club like Chelsea but that would depend on the conditions.”

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to bring in younger players to his first-team squad.

The Blues have often come under fire for their big-spending policy but Mourinho now sees potential in the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge.

“Next season Ben Sahar is ready to come up and be part of the first-team squad. Maybe next year one or two more will be ready.”

* The club have announced that a life-size bust of the late Peter Osgood has been commissioned. The memorial to the player nicknamed the “King of Stamford Bridge”, who died a year ago, will be in the East Stand reception of the ground.
