Carey new Wrexham boss

FORMER Cork City defender Brian Carey has taken over League Two club Wrexham after the sacking of manager Denis Smith.

Smith, who took charge at the Racecourse Ground in October 2001, has been helpless to prevent the Dragons sliding to within two points of the relegation zone, and now assistant coach Carey, who made over 300 first-team appearances for the club, is taking over.

Wrexham entered administration in December 2004 and were subsequently docked ten points and relegated to League Two.

Last August, however, a consortium led by businessman Neville Dickens bought the Welsh club from Alex Hamilton, which saw it exit administration and end 18 months of financial crisis.

However, they have struggled all season, prompting the club to axe Smith and his assistant, Kevin Russell.

Carey will take temporary charge of team affairs for Saturday’s trip to Swindon.
