SFA continue to thwart Rangers move for Smith
The Scottish Football Association refused Rangers permission to approach Smith on Monday, and their position was reiterated as they fought to keep the national team boss.
Smith asked to be released from his contract with the SFA on Monday and was predictably rebuffed.
His request, which came at a meeting prompted by Rangers making contact with the SFA, served to confirm Smith’s interest in a return to Ibrox.
However, the SFA insisted they would not sanction losing Smith at a crucial stage of their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.
That remained the case yesterday, with an SFA spokesperson reporting there was “no change” in the situation.
Within minutes of Paul Le Guen resigning as Light Blues boss last week, Smith emerged as favourite for the job.
Almost nine years have passed since Smith left the club to join Everton — and with the team’s fortunes in a state of turmoil, he is seen as the man to bring back silverware to Ibrox.
After a difficult spell with Everton, he has restored and arguably enhanced his reputation with Scotland.
Smith’s side surprisingly top their group, ahead of Italy and France, the two World Cup finalists.
SFA chief executive David Taylor said yesterday: “Where we are at the moment is that Walter remains an employee of the SFA.
“Walter understood the position the SFA is adopting on this matter.”
Meanwhile, Celtic’s reserves coach Kenny McDowall is expected to join Rangers, after the Bhoys confirmed he has quit Parkhead.
The former St Mirren striker has been with Celtic for a decade, and the Hoops’ second string are well placed for their sixth consecutive SPL reserve league title.
A statement on www.celticfc.net read: “Celtic Football Club can confirm that Kenny McDowall will be leaving his position as reserve team coach with immediate effect.
“The club thanks him for his contribution during his time at Celtic.”
Rangers have not yet confirmed McDowall’s appointment.
After agreeing a deal to bring Scotland defender Andy Webster on loan from Wigan on Friday, the continued recruitment activity at Ibrox is seen as further evidence that Smith’s appointment as Gers boss appears inevitable.
