THE last time Alan Lee was capped for Ireland, the opposition were Cyprus and he came on as a late sub. That was in 2004, at the start of the last World Cup campaign, when Brian Kerr’s team won 3-0 at Lansdowne Road and all was right with the world.

Two years on, the Dubliner is back in the running for a place against Cyprus, his chances of at least coming off the bench, if not actually starting, sharpened by Kevin Doyle’s struggle with injury.

If the call does come, the 28-year-old, who has been capped seven times at senior level, will be ready — indeed, by his own admission, more ready than he’s ever been.
