Delaney to sit out Staunton decision

FAI chief executive John Delaney will temporarily step down from UEFA’s control and disciplinary body in light of Steve Staunton facing a touchline ban.

Delaney to sit out Staunton decision

Delaney was recently appointed to the post, but due to a conflict of interests he can play no part in the decision- making process when it comes to reviewing Staunton’s case.

In his first competitive match in charge, the Republic of Ireland manager was banished to the stands during the Euro 2008 qualifying defeat to Germany in Stuttgart.

Frustrated by several of referee Luis Medina Cantalejo’s decisions, and having been warned once, Staunton kicked a bottle of water in frustration and berated the Spaniard in the 75th minute when a penalty appeal was turned down.

Cantalejo showed no hesitation in dismissing Staunton, who as he walked towards the tunnel, ripped his accreditation from around his neck.

Staunton faces a possible two-match ban and although Delaney will have no input with an outcome likely later this week, he said he “has no problem with passion”.
