EVERTON manager David Moyes insists plucking Andrew Johnson from the Championship was not a gamble even though everyone else refused to pay the asking price

Johnson has scored two goals in the opening three games of the season since Moyes persuaded the Everton board to splash out £8.6m (€12.7m) to bring the striker to Goodison Park last May.

Moyes said: “I didn’t think it was a gamble, not for one minute. He is worth every penny that’s for sure. He’s a nice, quiet lad and likes his work.
