The award is Ferguson's 15th monthly accolade no manager in the English top flight has won more. The 63-year-old Scot led his side to a maximum 12 Premiership points last month.

The Red Devils netted 10 goals in four games last month and 19-year-old England star Rooney scored four of them.

Nic Gault, from the Barclays Awards Panel, said: "Sir Alex's award not only marks a fantastic month for Manchester United but reinforces his position as one of the most successful managers in club and league history.

"Wayne Rooney also deserves recognition for his first Barclays Player of the Month Award as his fantastic strike rate has been instrumental in the club's recent run of form."
