Milan make it three straight wins as Bayern go under again

A FILIPPO INZAGHI double maintained AC Milan’s perfect Champions League start with a 2-1 win at Bayern Munich. It was the German side's second defeat of the competition.

Bayern paid for failing to convert pressure into goals as their stuttering Champions League campaign failed to lift off. The result left the 2001 champions with just one point from their first three games and a mountain to climb to qualify from group G for the second stage.

Inzaghi’s header six minutes from time separated the two sides after the Italian’s tap-in opener just after halftime was cancelled out within two minutes by a header from Bayern's Claudio Pizarro.

The home side, desperate for a first win, had begun their task the right way, harrying in midfield and dominating large periods of the game, but Milan notched up their third straight win.

Meanwhile Javier Saviola was in a similar mood as he scored once in each half to lead Barcelona to a comfortable 3-1 win over Lokomotiv Moscow as the Spaniards maintained their 100 percent record in group H.

The visitors went ahead in the 29th minute when Gaizka Mendieta sent a long ball into the Lokomotiv penalty area and Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert out-sprinted a defender to beat goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov from close range.

Saviola doubled the lead with a neat header into the far corner just two minutes later following a right wing cross from Xavi. The Argentine then made it 3-0 shortly after the interval following a nice one-two with Luis Enrique.

Nigerian striker James Obiorah salvaged some pride for the Russians with a consolation goal in the 55th minute, but otherwise Lokomotiv, who missed their captain and leading European scorer Dmitry Loskov through suspension, rarely threatened a tight Barcelona defence.

Barcelona’s Spanish rivals Deportivo Coruna got their Champions League campaign back on track Tuesday as second-half goals from Roy Makaay, Joan Capdevila and Cesar earned them a 3-1 victory at home to RC Lens.

Deportivo, mauled 4-0 at home to AC Milan last week, were heading towards trouble once again when Daniel Moreira converted a low cross from the right to give Lens a deserved lead on 10 minutes.

The Spanish side stormed back but poor finishing frustrated them before a stunning volley from Makaay saw them level the scores five minutes after the break.

Makaay then set Capdevila up for the second, the substitute midfielder lashing in from the left of the area on 79 minutes, and centre-back Cesar nodded in from a corner six minutes from time to secure victory. The result gave Depor six points from three games, following their victory over Bayern Munich and last week's defeat to AC Milan. Lens were left struggling with just a point from their three matches.

Bayer Leverkusen secured their first points in Group F, beating Maccabi Haifa 2-0 in Nicosia.

Two goals from Croatian Marko Babic in the 31st and 64th minutes did the damage as Haifa struggled for most of the match.

Haifa's woes were compounded as Avishai Zano missed a penalty in the 44th minute when his spot kick hit the post and he then blasted the rebound high into the stands.

Haifa coach Yitzhak Shum threw caution to the winds after his team had conceded the second goal and brought on three attacking players. But the ploy failed as the Germans held on.

In Newcastle’s Group, Dynamo Kiev held Feyenoord to a goalless draw.
