O’Brien in talks with Newcastle over contract extension

NEWCASTLE United defender Andy O’Brien is in talks with the club regarding a contract extension.

O’Brien’s present deal expires in 2007 but the Republic of Ireland international is keen to commit his future to The Magpies.

The centre half joined Newcastle from Bradford almost three years ago and he has established himself as a mainstay of the defence.

The 24-year-old recently impressed for Ireland in the 0-0 draw against World Cup winners Brazil and admits his display against Ronaldo and co boosted his confidence.

He confirmed negotiations with The Magpies are underway and he is determined to prolong his time at St James’ Park.

“We are in talks about signing a new contract,” acknowledged O’Brien.
