Zalayeta’s strike extra-special as Juventus master Madrid
Juve substitute David Trezeguet lashed home on 75 minutes to draw the Italians level, and Zalayeta won it with a low drive deep in extra time.
Juve, trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Spain, could have wiped out their deficit within five minutes.
Ibrahimovic squandered a glorious opportunity when he blasted a half-volley straight at Real keeper Casillas after being put in by Marcelo Zalayeta. Former Juve star Zinedine Zidane was showing his class with some terrific flicks and tricks but the quality attacking play was still coming from the home side.
Mauro Camoranesi unleashed a superb 25-yard strike that fizzed wide, with Casillas struggling to get across his goal, and the Spanish number one was then relieved to bundle Alessandro Del Piero’s vicious long-range bouncing drive around the post.
Zidane had Real’s first real chance of note but his 20-yard shot went well wide of Gianluigi Buffon right-hand post.
Ronaldo was inches away from firing his side ahead six minutes after the restart. A breathtaking run from halfway saw him speed past two defenders, but Buffon did well to tip his rasping low left-foot drive onto the outside of the post and away to safety.
Juve brought Trezeguet on as they tried to re-ignite their attack and it seemed to breathe new life into Ibrahimovic, who shot wide from a tight angle.
Trezeguet then failed to convert a driven cross from Camoranesi as the Italians piled forward, but the Frenchman was soon celebrating.
The outstanding Ibrahimovic showed great awareness to nod down a deep cross and Trezeguet showed composure to score acrobatically from six yards out. With extra time looming Real poured forward in search of the away goal that would settle the match and Roberto Carlos was only denied a superb free-kick winner by Buffon.
Michael Owen, on as an extra-time replacement for Raul, barely had a touch and his hopes of making an impact were dashed when Ronaldo was sent off for retaliation; the Brazilian took exception to Tacchinardi’s attentions as he made his way into the box and kicked out. Referee Markus Merk took advice from his assistant before giving Ronaldo a straight red card and sending off Tacchinardi for a second caution. Figo struck the resulting free-kick inches wide with Buffon stranded. With penalties less then four minutes away, Juve won it when Real failed to clear a right-wing cross and Zalayeta smashed the ball home from the edge of the box.
