Sweet Sonya nets hat-trick for Ireland

The Irish Women's soccer team defeated hosts Turkey 3-0 in the World University Games in Izmir yesterday.

A second half hat-trick from Sonya Hughes powered Ireland to victory and to the top of their Group. Noel King's side will now face New Zealand.

The men's football side lost 1-0 to Japan in their second Group B game.

Today the Irish women's basketball team are in action against Germany, while Irish swimmers Niamh McDonnell (Dublin), Julie Douglas (Belfast) and Susanna Murphy (Dublin) are in action as is fencer, Siobhan Byrne, a former Irish Examiner National Junior Sports Star award winner.
