Barca: Henry move unlikely but Kewell is appealing

BARCELONA’S new sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, has all but ruled out a move for Arsenal’s French striker Thierry Henry.

Barca: Henry move unlikely but Kewell is appealing

Barca press secretary Juanjo Castillo sparked speculation that Henry could be on his way to Catalonia, following the club's failure to land England captain David Beckham, by stating: "Henry is one of the players we're hoping to talk to this week.

"We have to see whether he is interested in coming. Everyone likes Henry and he's a great player."

But Begiristain admitted: "I think Henry may be too expensive for us. We have economic problems at the club and his transfer fee would be very high, as would his wages."

He was, though, more hopeful of luring Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho to the Nou Camp.

"We are trying to arrange a deal. He (Ronaldinho) is a very good player and we are waiting to hear an answer from his agents," Begiristain said.

Another Barca target is Australian international Harry Kewell, who is likely to leave cash-strapped Leeds this summer.

"Kewell is a very interesting player for us. He is on our list but he is not a priority," Begiristain said.

"I think he would cost around £10-11million, maybe less to a foreign club, but that is still more than what we would want to spend on him."

Wolves boss Dave Jones is to sit down with the Molineux board next week to thrash out details of a transfer war chest designed at keeping the club in the Premiership.

Although armed with a list of names he would like, one chief executive Jez Moxey was made aware of recently, much depends on just how much Jones has to spend.

Initially, Jones is eager to sign up skipper Paul Ince and Denis Irwin for another year following the expiry of their contracts at the end of last season's successful campaign.

"I've not yet spoken to the board, but we've a meeting in the next week to see what we've got and what we're going to be doing. You've got to spend within your limitations and hopefully there will be some money there and we can get the players who are going to help," said Jones.

New one-year offers have been made to Irwin and Ince, with the latter understood to have let close associates know he wants another season in the top flight.

At 38, former Republic of Ireland full-back Irwin might now struggle in the Premiership, although Jones is keen to have both men back on board for the experience they offer.

"I'll speak to Denis and Paul over the next few days and see how far down the line we are," added Jones.

"We want them to stay. It's important they stay as it would help the youngsters we've got in a big way, and also whoever else we bring in."

Tottenham target Frederic Kanoute is optimistic his move from West Ham to White Hart Lane will go through, if the clubs can thrash out an agreement on the transfer fee.

The Hammers striker, 25, features prominently on Glenn Hoddle's summer shopping list.

But it is understood Spurs' valuation of the Frenchman is around £2million lower than the fee West Ham are looking for.

The forward has already admitted he will "consider" a switch to Spurs if the two clubs agree on his fee and his agent yesterday confirmed the Kanoute camp believe a deal will be finalised.

Kanoute's representative Willie McKay said: "We're hopeful the deal will happen."

Meanwhile, Bohemians and Shelbourne will turn their heads towards Switzerland today for the Champions League and UEFA Cup qualifying draws. eircom Premier Division champions Bohemians come in as seeds at the opening phase, while Glentoran (Northern Ireland) and Barry Town (Wales) are in the draw but are not seeded.
