Hughes on mend from tumour

FORMER England captain Emlyn Hughes is feeling “absolutely terrific” as he continues his recovery following the discovery of a cancerous tumour in his head.

Hughes, who led the all-conquering Liverpool team of the 1970s, was speaking at Bangor racecourse yesterday after welcoming his horse Maragun back into the winners’ enclosure.

“I was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in my head in August. But I have been having treatment and the last two reports have been really fantastic,” he said.

“At the second last one I was told that the tumour had not grown for three-and-a-half months,” Hughes added.

“And last time I was told that if anything it had shrunk.

“I feel absolutely terrific.

“And it is great to come here and have a winner.”

Maragun, owned by Hughes in partnership with Stuart Mercer, was ridden to victory by Tom Scudamore for trainer Martin Pipe.
