HUNDREDS of Irish fans missed last night’s World Cup game after thick fog led to the closure of the only airport on the Faroe Islands.

Four flights were due to leave Dublin Airport with a total of almost 400 fans between 5.30pm and 8pm yesterday morning before a dense fog descended on the Faroes, forcing a delay.

The earliest flight, one of two organised by tour operator Celtic Horizon and with 92 passengers on board, did leave on time. However, it was then diverted to Stavanger in Norway.
