Manchester United are chasing me, says restless Makelele

MANCHESTER UNITED have held talks with the agent of Real Madrid’s French international midfielder Claude Makelele, the player claimed yesterday.

Manchester United are chasing me, says restless Makelele

The 30-year-old has been labelled Real's most important player by several of his team-mates and his absence through injury in last week's Champions League semi-final defeat by Juventus was evident as they lacked his hard tackling in midfield.

The former Nantes, Marseille and Celta Vigo star claimed Real could well be missing him on a permanent basis next season if United come up with the £10m at which he is valued.

"I'd love to go and play for Manchester United," said the Democratic Republic of Congo-born midfielder, whose father was a Zaire international. They have been in contact with my representatives and I'd love to go there.

"I will say yes if an offer comes in. I feel the need to discover a different championship after five years in Spain.

"Playing for Alex Ferguson is something I want to experience. He is a truly great manager," added Makelele.

Makelele joined Real three years ago from Celta Vigo for £10m and was a member of the Champions League winning side last term he also won a French league title with Nantes during his five years there.

Meanwhile, Arsenal's Robert Pires has admitted that should Spanish giants Real Madrid offer him a deal it would be 'difficult' to reject.

"It would be difficult to refuse Madrid," he said. "As far as I'm concerned, I've had no approach from

either the president or the coach. But if the Real dossier was put in front of me, I'd have to think about it."

Pires said Madrid are not the only La Laiga side keen on securing his services. "Valencia have been in touch with me and it's a pleasure to know that a club like them have been following me this year."
