Magpies swoop for free agent Johnson
The former Manchester United player was a free agent after he was released by Aston Villa - and is the first signing by new manager Graeme Souness.
The 35-year-old played in the United side that secured the 1999 treble with victory in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
His last game was an international, his 61st cap for Norway against Wales in May.
And Souness will be hoping the experienced centre-back can bring some stability to the Magpies back four.
Aaron Hughes has partnered Andy O’Brien at the heart of Newcastle’s defence this season after the sale of Jonathan Woodgate to Real Madrid - and they conceded nine goals in the first four games.
