RYAN GIGGS has cautioned against demanding too much too soon from Wayne Rooney in an effort to prevent Manchester United’s new striking sensation suffering premature burnout.

It may be hard to believe amid the frenzy the £27 million teenager created with his debut hat-trick at Old Trafford on Tuesday night but Giggs was subjected to the same intense scrutiny when he broke into the Red Devils first team 13 years, 602 appearances and 14 major medals ago.

Rooney was only five when Giggs, lauded unfairly as the “new George Best”, marked his first United start with the winner against Manchester City in 1991 and remained the centre of attention until David Beckham’s personal life began to dominate the headlines.
