Cunningham set for new Brum deal

BIRMINGHAM are poised to offer a new contract to inspirational skipper Kenny Cunningham.

Cunningham set for new Brum deal

The 33-year-old, who signed from Wimbledon in July 2002, has 14 months left on his current deal and manager Steve Bruce believes the veteran has at least two more seasons in the top flight.

The Republic of Ireland captain has been influential for Bruce as his side have established themselves in the Premiership in the past three seasons.

Cunningham has formed a solid partnership with England’s Matthew Upson but expected Birmingham officials to allow his contract to run out before opening negotiations.

Bruce, however, has plans to offer his captain a deal at the end of the season.

Bruce said: “Kenny has got a year left and I’ll have my annual meeting with the board of directors in May and I’ll put my recommendations forward.

“Kenny Cunningham has been magnificent for Birmingham City. If we could find another three of those type of people and players on a free transfer, it would be fantastic.

“He’s still got a lot of football left in him, the way he prepares and conducts himself, and his partnership with Matty has been excellent.”
